Texas deregulated retail electricity in 2002, which means most Texans choose their own provider. In practice that choice is made once, under time pressure, and then never revisited — while the rate quietly rolls onto a much more expensive month-to-month plan when the contract ends. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive plan for the same home is routinely large enough to matter more than most household budgeting.
It reads the public plan data every Texas retail provider is required to file, works out what each plan would actually cost at your usage rather than at the advertised headline number, and ranks them. Today that covers every listed plan from every licensed provider. You can read exactly how the ranking works on the methodology page.
This is the question worth asking of any comparison site, so here is the plain answer. PowerBot has no affiliate agreements, no paid placements, and no revenue. Nobody pays to appear, to rank higher, or to be labelled best value. Nothing on this site is sponsored. If that changes, it will be stated here and on every affected page before it takes effect — not buried in a footer. Any future arrangement will be a flat fee that cannot vary by provider, because the moment ranking depends on who pays more, the ranking is worthless and so is the site.
You can compare plans without an account. If you create one, it stores your email, your ZIP code and your typical usage so the recommendations fit your home. Your details are never sold, rented, or passed to providers. PowerBot is not a broker and does not enrol you in anything — when you pick a plan, you sign up on the provider's own site, directly with them.
Plan data comes from the Public Utility Commission of Texas Power to Choose dataset, which every retail provider must file into. PowerBot does not set rates and does not negotiate them. If a plan's terms look wrong, the provider's Electricity Facts Label is the authoritative document, and it is linked from every plan page.
Rates change constantly and the source data is not always clean. If a plan is listed incorrectly, telling us is genuinely useful.
